My mother’s portal was perhaps the nicest portal I’d ever been in. No flames like Val’s, and no pain like Killian’s. Just a nice, hazy blue surrounding all four of us, and a sea of little stars twinkling in the space beyond.

I’d been too exhausted the last time to really pay any attention to it, but now that I was, I was grateful that I did. It was a pleasing sight, and a wonderful experience. Maybe I’d have her do it one last time before the end.

Assuming we didn’t all die at the hands of Tristan and whatever he’d gotten himself into, of course. Which was pretty likely.

Last night, he’d summoned the fury of a volcano. If this was even worse than that…

I shuddered to even think about what kind of fresh hell we might be getting ourselves into this time.

When my mother’s portal dissipated, we were in a new spot. It was afternoon, which wasn’t shocking, since my mother had said we were going to Greece. I could see a nice river running along in the distance, and a few towering, crumbling columns of stone not too far from where we were standing.

“The Nekromanteion of Archerontas,” Val said, answering what had been sure to be my next question. “The temple to Hades and Persephone. Or what’s left of it, at any rate.”

Which, looking at it, wasn’t much. But neither did I see any hint of Tristan, or whatever it was he was planning. The area was basically empty, save for the remnants of the temple.

I frowned, putting my hand over my eyes to block out some of the sun. “Where’s Tristan? Shouldn’t we summon some more allies?”

My mother’s expression echoed my own. “I’m not sure on Tristan. My source said he was headed right here. Did we beat him? And there’s no time to get anyone else.”

That wasn’t overly reassuring. It’d be quite the turn of luck if we did beat Tristan to the punch, though. Finally getting ahead on something would be handy.

Rowena bit her bottom lip. “Spread out and send Charly into the temple to scout ahead. But no one go that far. I don’t want us getting singled out or anything.”

It was as solid a plan as any, even if Charly did whine at being the scout once again.

“Really?” he said, pouting on my shoulder.

I shrugged. “Do you really want to go against my mother over something as slight as this?”

Charly complained some more, but he did as my mother asked without any further fighting. He flitted about, heading straight under the columns of the temple entrance.

That’s when the odd thing happened. He disappeared.

Val and I both gasped. Rowena, who had been busy exploring, turned to focus on us. “What is it? What happened?”

I pointed toward the temple entrance. “Charly, he… he’s gone.”

Invisibility was rare enough. I was positive it wasn’t one of Charly’s powers, so it must have been something else that made him disappear.

My mother tsked. “That’s not good. The portal to the underworld must already be open, then.
